One Hundred Years Ago

One hundred years ago, the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Arthur Nikisch and engineers from Deutsche Grammophone recorded the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.  2013 is the 100th anniversary of this historic recording, and DG is celebrating this partnership by issuing a 50 CD collection of recordings made by DG and the orchestra over the last 100 years.

In addition to this first recording by Nikish, the set includes performances with Sir Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Wilhelm Furtwängler,  Gustavo Dudamel, Karl Böhm, and Herbert Von Karajan conducting the orchestra.

Read more about the DG's Centenary Edition where you can listen to the first movement of  Nikisch's historic recording with the Berlin Philharmonic.  For six minutes, take a step back in time with Arthur Nikisch and the Berlin Philharmonic as they play the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.  Just look for the red play button in the audio widget, just after the first paragraph.  Push play and listen...
